General=20 Information

The Annals publishes original = work on all=20 aspects of rheumatology and disorders of connective tissue. Laboratory = and=20 clinical studies are equally welcome.=20

Submissions are accepted only on the = understanding=20 that they have not been submitted elsewhere and have not been and will = not be=20 published elsewhere (either in part or in whole) and are subject to = editorial=20 revision.=20

Authors must declare and submit copies of = any=20 manuscripts in preparation or submitted elsewhere that are closely = related to=20 the manuscript to be considered. These can be uploaded as supplementary = files on=20 Bench>Press.=20

You may suggest suitable = reviewers (with full=20 mailing addresses, contact numbers, and email addresses) for your=20 paper.

We encourage authors to send copies of = any previous=20 referees' reports on their research and indicate how these comments have = helped=20 the authors to improve the submitted paper. This may be helpful to our = editors=20 and reviewers. Please upload these as supplementary files on=20 Bench>Press.

Authors must conform to the uniform = requirements for=20 manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (BMJ = 1991;302:338-41).=20 Randomised controlled trials should be presented in a manner and format=20 consistent with the Revised CONSORT=20 statement published in JAMA (2001;285:1987-91). =

Manuscripts that do not conform to the = following=20 instructions may be returned for modification before being = reviewed.=20

Formatting=20 guidelines

All submissions must be typed with double = line=20 spacing. All abbreviations must be defined.=20

Title sheet=20
Stating the title of the paper, the category submitted = (extended=20 report, concise report, etc), the authors, their affiliations (one = department=20 and institution each), and the name and postal address (+ Tel/Fax/Email = numbers)=20 of the corresponding author.=20

Extended=20 reports
These represent a substantial body of laboratory = or=20 clinical work. The study should be presented in sections - = namely:=20

Abstract =
No=20 more than 250 words, summarising the problem being considered, how the = study was=20 performed, the salient results and the principal conclusions under = subheadings=20 'Objectives', 'Methods', 'Results', and 'Conclusions'.=20

Key Words = (maximum of=20 5)
These should be given beneath the Abstract and in the = box=20 provided in the online submission process.=20

Introduction=20
Brief description of the background that led to the study = (current results and conclusions should not be included).=20

Methods
Details=20 relevant to the conduct of the study. Wherever possible give numbers of = subjects=20 studied (not percentages alone). Statistical methods should be clearly = explained=20 at the end of this section.=20

Results =
Work=20 should be reported in SI units. Undue repetition in text and tables = should be=20 avoided. Comment on validity and significance of results is appropriate = but=20 broader discussion of their implication is restricted to the next=20 section.=20

Subheadings that aid clarity of = presentation within=20 this and the previous section are encouraged.=20

Discussion =
The=20 nature and findings of the study are placed in context of other relevant = published data. Caveats to the study should be discussed. Avoid undue=20 extrapolation from the study topic.=20

Acknowledgments = and=20 affiliations
Individuals with direct involvement in the = study but=20 not included in authorship may be acknowledged. The source of financial = support=20 and industry affiliations of all those involved must be stated.=20

References =
In=20 accordance with the Vancouver agreement these are cited by the numerical = system=20 and listed in the order cited in the text, not in alphabetical order by = authors'=20 names. (In the text, each reference number should be in square brackets = on the=20 line.) List first six authors and then et al if appropriate. = Journal=20 titles are abbreviated in accordance with the style of Index Medicus. = See=20 references in the journal. Information from manuscripts not yet in = press, papers=20 reported at meetings or personal communications should be cited in the = text, not=20 as formal references. Responsibility for the accuracy and completeness = of the=20 references lies with the author.=20

Tables =
Tables should be submitted in the same format as = your article=20 and embedded in the article.

Please=20 note: Bench>Press CANNOT accept Excel files. If = your=20 table(s) are in Excel, copy and paste them into the manuscript file = (where cited=20 is preferable). In extreme circumstances, Excel files can be = uploaded as=20 supplementary files; however, we advise against this as this will not be = acceptable if your article is accepted for publication.

Tables = should be=20 self-explanatory, and the data they contain must not be duplicated in = the text=20 or figures.

Figures
Legends=20 should be listed on a separate page. For photomicrographs include the = stain=20 used: magnification should be indicated by a bar marker on the figure. = If=20 appropriate, coloured illustrations may be published but part of the = cost is=20 charged to the author.

Black and white images
Black = and white=20 images (photographs, line drawings, graphs etc.) should be saved and = supplied=20 as:
TIFF, GIF, or high quality JPEG files to a minimum of 300 = dpi.

Colour images
Colour images = should be saved=20 and supplied as:
TIFF, GIF, or high quality JPEG files to a minimum = of 600=20 dpi.
Colour images should not exceed 2MB at a minimum resolution of = 600 dpi.=20 If you choose a higher resolution your image dimension should be reduced = accordingly to keep the file under 2MB.
NB Scanners may = automatically=20 increase image size at a higher resolution.=20

Powerpoint files
SINGLE PAGE = Powerpoint=20 files can be submitted. Please submit ONE slide per file = ONLY. =20
Alternatively Powerpoint files can be saved as JPEG or TIFF files = and=20 submitted as a single image file.

Concise=20 reports
A brief communication presenting laboratory or = clinical=20 work, collected case reports or, exceptionally, single case reports. The = format=20 is identical to that of an Extended Report (see above) and should = include an=20 Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion (for = cases,=20 'Case Reports' will substitute for Methods and Results). Concise reports = are=20 restricted to no more than 1500 words, 15 references, one table, and two = figures.=20

Hypothesis=20 article
Contributions which present an interesting theory, = discussed in relation to published data, are welcome. It is suggested = that=20 authors first discuss the subject and scope of their planned article = directly=20 with the Editor.=20

Review=20 article
Although these are usually commissioned, authors = are=20 invited to discuss directly with the Editor possible topics for = review.=20

Lesson of the=20 month
Real case histories that illustrate important = clinical=20 lessons are divided into Case History and Discussion, with clear = delineation of=20 'the lesson'. Lesson of the month is restricted to no more than 800 = words, one=20 figure and one table.=20

Letters to the=20 Editor
Comments arising from recent articles published in = the=20 Annals are welcomed and will appear in the section Matters = Arising.=20 Original observations relating to short clinical or laboratory studies = or case=20 reports may also be appropriately presented as a Letter to the Editor. = Letters=20 are not divided into sections and are limited to no more than 600 words = and 10=20 references; one table and one figure may be included.=20

Instructions for references, tables, and = figures are=20 the same as for full length articles.=20

Proofs
Contributors will receive one proof = to be=20 read carefully for printer's errors.
Alterations to the original text = should=20 be kept to a minimum and may be charged to the author.=20

Reprints
These=20 may be ordered when the proofs are returned.=20

Registering with Bench>Press =

Enter = your email=20 address: This is your unique user identification and will be = needed to=20 log into the system on ALL occasions.
Enter a password: = This=20 will be encrypted for security reasons, and will not be known to either = the ARD=20 editorial office or HighWire Press. If you forget your password you will = need to=20 click on =91I HAVE FORGOTTEN MY PASSWORD=92 and follow the steps=20 outlined.
Choose a =91password hint=92 question and = provide an=20 answer: You will need to provide this answer if you forget your=20 password.

Please note: = a single password will be created which applies to = ALL=20 journals using the Bench>Press online submission and tracking = system.=20 Once you have registered for your first journal, you do not need to = re-register=20 in order to use another journal's system. Simply log in with your = existing email=20 address and password.

2. Verification:
An email containing an URL will be emailed to you. Click on the = URL. You=20 email address will then be verified. This helps ensure that your email = address=20 is not being used fraudulently.=20

3. =20 Profile:
You will then be = asked to provide=20 a basic profile consisting of your contact information, plus expertise = terms.=20 Although you may use the same e-mail address and password to access any = journal=20 using the Bench>Press system, you must create an individual = profile=20 with each journal.

Submitting a=20 manuscript

To submit a manuscript enter the author = area and=20 click on the "SUBMIT A NEW MANUSCRIPT" hyperlink. You will be presented = with a=20 series of fields for entering your manuscript metadata and the uploading = of your=20 text and figure files. Supplemental data can also be uploaded. The = system will=20 automatically convert your files to a single PDF for reviewing purposes. = You=20 will be asked to approve the conversion before it is considered formally = submitted to the journal. The conversion process can take up to a = maximum of 15=20 minutes; an email will be sent informing you when the conversion is = complete.=20 Click on =91SUBMISSIONS READY FOR YOU TO PROOF=92 in the Author area to = approve your=20 article. During conversion the system will automatically hyperlink the=20 references to Medline and/or the journal the article was published in = (if the=20 journal is hosted on the web by HighWire Press). Please ensure you = include the=20 heading "References" at the top of the citations for optimum linkage.=20

You are able to start your submission and = continue=20 the process on another occasion.
