Guide for Authors Submitting Manuscripts

Mail = manuscripts=20 and all other editorial communications to the Editor, The Journal = of=20 Rheumatology, 920 Yonge St., Suite 115, Toronto, Canada M4W 3C7. = Articles,=20 editorials, hypotheses, case reports of exceptional interest and = letters=20 will be accepted for publication on condition that they are = submitted=20 solely to this journal. Subject matter may relate to the broad = field of=20 rheumatology, rehabilitation medicine, immunology, infectious = diseases or=20 orthopedic subjects pertaining to the rheumatic diseases. = Manuscripts=20 containing original material are accepted for consideration with = the=20 understanding that neither the article nor any part of its = essential=20 substance, tables, or figures has been or will be published or = submitted=20 for publication elsewhere before appearing in = The=20 Journal. This restriction does not apply to = abstracts=20 or press reports published in connection with scientific=20 meetings.=20

Conflict of Interest: The Journal asks = authors=20 of research articles to disclose at the time of submission any = financial=20 arrangement they may have with a company whose product figures = prominently=20 in the submitted manuscript or with a company making a competing = product.=20 Such information will be held in confidence while the paper is = under=20 review and will not influence the editorial decision, but if the = article=20 is accepted for publication, the editors will usually discuss with = the=20 authors the manner in which such information is to be communicated = to the=20 reader.

Because the essence of editorials is selection and = interpretation of=20 the literature, The Journal expects that authors of such = articles=20 will disclose any financial interest in a company (or its = competitor) that=20 makes a product discussed in the article. Potential authors who = have=20 questions about these issues should contact the Editor.

The Journal of Rheumatology discourages submission of = more than=20 one article dealing with related aspects of the same study. If = authors are=20 aware of any published paper or other manuscript in preparation or = submitted elsewhere or to The Journal related to the = manuscript=20 under consideration (e.g., another manuscript resulting from the = same=20 study), a copy of the related paper should be sent along with the = paper=20 submitted for publication.

Articles are considered only for exclusive publication in = The=20 Journal with the understanding that they have not been = published=20 elsewhere (in part or in full, in other words or in the same words = in=20 letter or article form, or otherwise), are not at the time of = submission=20 under consideration by another journal or other publication, and = will not=20 be submitted elsewhere unless rejected by The Journal of=20 Rheumatology. If an author violates this requirement or = engages in=20 other similar misconduct, the Editor may, in addition to rejecting = the=20 manuscript, impose a moratorium on the acceptance of new = manuscripts from=20 the author and if the misconduct is deemed sufficiently serious, = may refer=20 the matter to the author's academic institution or hospital and/or = the=20 appropriate disciplinary body.

Manuscripts should be concise and typed double-spaced on one = side of=20 good quality paper with liberal margins. Journal titles cited = in the=20 references must conform to the abbreviations used in Index = Medicus=20 and follow the style shown below. Manuscripts should be = submitted as=20 hard copy and on disk.

A covering letter to the manuscript signed by the corresponding = author=20 should indicate that the final manuscript has been seen and = approved by=20 all the authors and that they have given necessary attention to = ensure the=20 integrity of the work. Provide an original and 3 = copies=20 each of manuscript and tables, as well as = an=20 electronic copy on disk. Submit 4 glossy prints of each figure.=20 Xerographic copies are not acceptable. = Number each=20 page, including tables and figure legends, in sequence. Organize = the=20 manuscript to include: Title Page, Abstract, Introduction, = Materials and=20 Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgment, References, Tables, = Figures,=20 and Figure Legends. For full length articles, submit a structured = abstract=20 of no more than 250 words (a simple abstract for Case Reports = should not=20 exceed 100 words). Indicate the main sections of the manuscript by = side=20 headings. Use the Arabic numbering system throughout the = manuscript except=20 at the beginning of sentences. Check manuscripts carefully before=20 submission. To aid in the review process, include the statistical=20 worksheet (not for publication), if applicable. Because of = increasing=20 publication costs, present the message as concisely as possible. = For=20 example, the Discussion should not exceed half the length of the = whole=20 article (preferably a third). Authors are encouraged to suggest = the=20 names of 3 or 4 persons who might be considered suitable reviewers = of=20 their work.

Brief communications are short investigative papers and = reports,=20 organized in the same manner as full length manuscripts, but which = contain=20 1000 words or less, with no more than 3 figures or tables, and up = to 15=20 references.

Case Reports should contain no more than 1000 words but authors = may=20 submit a description of the clinical findings and the course of = their=20 cases under the general heading of Case Reports in place of the = Materials=20 and Methods and Results sections. They should contain no more than = 3=20 figures or tables and no more than 15 references.

Images in Rheumatology are abbreviated case descriptions of = abstract=20 length (about 250 words and 3 to 5 references) that feature = exceptional=20 visual illustrations.

Letters to the Editor: See The=20 Journal Correspondence section. = Supplements.=20 The Journal welcomes the opportunity to publish proceedings = of=20 significant symposia providing the material represents original = work not=20 previously published.

Symposium organizers are urged to contact the Editor well in = advance of=20 the symposium date with a draft program. Faculty, subject matter = and=20 editorial content are all subject to the approval of the editorial = committee. Papers submitted to be published in the proceedings = must=20 conform to the style outlined in this guide before they will be = considered=20 for publication.

Details of Format and Organization

Title Page. Title page should be separate and have in = the=20 following order:

Full title of manuscript, which should be concise = but=20 informative.=20
Given and surname of author(s) without = degrees.=20
Structured abstract, 250 words or less briefly = describing=20 Objective, Methods, Results, Conclusion. This applies to = original=20 articles only. Case reports do not require structured=20 abstracts.=20
Key Indexing Terms=97must be MeSH terms; others will = be=20 rewritten by the Editor. No more than 6 terms.=20
Name of department(s) and institution(s) to which = the work=20 should be attributed.=20
The source(s) of support in the form of grants or = industrial=20 support.=20
Initials, surnames, appointments and highest = academic=20 degrees of all authors.=20
Name and address of author to whom requests for = reprints=20 should be made.=20
Name and address of author responsible for = correspondence=20 about the manuscript.=20
A short running footline of no more than 4 = words.=20

Acknowledgment

Acknowledgment, if applicable, should be added at the end of = the=20 discussion of the paper and before the references. It should not=20 acknowledge grant or industrial support for fellowship awards, all = of=20 which should appear on the title page.

Tables

Type each table on a separate sheet, double-spaced. Number = tables=20 consecutively and supply a brief legend for each. References cited = only in=20 tables should be numbered in the sequence established by = identification in=20 the text.

Figures

These should be numbered with the author's name on the back and = the top=20 clearly marked. Legends should be listed on a separate sheet. = Figures=20 should be professionally drawn and photographed and the critical = area of=20 radiographs or photomicrographs should be indicated. Freehand or=20 typewritten lettering is unacceptable. Send sharp glossy black and = white=20 photographic prints no larger than 12.8 x 18 cm (5" x 7"); for=20 photomicrographs send prints no wider than 9 cm (31/2"). Cite each = figure=20 in the text in consecutive order. The contributor must bear all = the costs=20 of color printing.

References

Number references consecutively in the order in which they are=20 mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables and = legends by=20 Arabic numerals (in parentheses). References cited only in tables = or in=20 legends to figures should be numbered in accordance with a = sequence=20 established by the first identification in the text of the = particular=20 table or illustration. Use abbreviations for titles of medical = journals=20 that conform to those in Index Medicus. References = style should=20 conform to that suggested in =93Uniform Requirements for = Manuscripts=20 Submitted to Medical Journals=94 (Annals of Internal Medicine=20 1997;126:36=9647). Avoid using abstracts as references; = =93unpublished=20 observations=94 and =93personal communication=94 may not be used = as references,=20 although references to written, not verbal, communications may be = inserted=20 (in parentheses) in the text. Include among the references = manuscripts=20 accepted but not yet published; designate the journal followed by = =93in=20 press.=94 Information from manuscripts submitted but not yet = accepted should=20 be cited in the text as =93unpublished observation=94 (in = parentheses).=20 Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references, which must = be=20 verified against original sources in the typescript and on the = page proof.=20 Examples of correct forms of references are given below.
